WHY THIS IS INTERESTING
The speaker cable, power amplifier channel and analogue signal run can all disappear.

Genelec Smart IP makes each loudspeaker an active network endpoint. A standard Ethernet run can carry uncompressed network audio, management and PoE power to the loudspeaker.

For a home cinema that is designed around network audio from the start, this can materially change the rack, cable routes and service strategy. It does not mean every conventional AV processor can connect directly: the upstream system still needs to provide the required Dante/AES67 channel feeds.

CURATED SMART IP RANGE

The models most relevant to private cinema.

Genelec also offers the 4436A pendant model and a Smart IP subwoofer. We are deliberately not giving those standalone product pages here: pendant speakers are rarely the natural geometry for a dedicated cinema, and subwoofer coverage belongs on HomeCinemaSubwoofers.co.za.

TWO DIFFERENT GENELEC ECOSYSTEMS
SAM / GLMModels such as 8351B and 8361A are Smart Active Monitors calibrated and managed with GLM. They are not the same thing as Smart IP installation speakers.
Smart IP4410A, 4420A, 4430A and 4435A are installed-audio products using Smart IP Manager, with Dante/AES67 network audio and PoE power.
Home cinema implicationBoth can form precise active systems, but their infrastructure, routing and management tools differ. The architecture should be selected before cables and rack equipment are finalised.
NETWORK DESIGN

Think like a network engineer and a cinema designer.

01

PoE budget

Genelec recommends PoE+ IEEE 802.3at for maximum performance. The switch has to provide the aggregate power budget for every connected loudspeaker.

02

QoS and clocking

Networked audio is timing-sensitive. Gigabit networking and appropriate QoS are the sensible starting point for multi-channel cinema routing.

03

Processor interface

The cinema processor or an AoIP interface must create the correct channel feeds. The presence of Dante at the loudspeaker does not create those feeds by itself.
